I'm looking for a job and seem to be lost....what other options are there for teachers??

I'm a 1st year teacher in MI, the school I'm working at is consolidating. I love my job, but am having trouble finding another. I have a bachelors in science and am certified to teach k-8, 6-8 math, 6-8 science, and 6-8 english. I don't want to switch careers, but it seems it may be the only option. HELP PLEASE!!!!

Come teach English is Shenzhen, China. It's a blast.
Reply:We always have 200+ applications for any teaching job that is posted in this state. I cannot believe it is much different elsewhere. We are in a slowdown that is likely to last either through this year or another four years depending upon how the election goes. Several of my friends, all highly qualified technical specialists, are now seeking employment. My best friend has been looking now for a year and a half. He works as a temporary. He got his first gig today in three weeks and had to drive 60 miles to get to it. Probably the cost of gas will eat up most of what he makes. Even barista jobs in this city are hard to come by. The guy that pours my coffee every morning at my favorite cafe has a masters degree.

OK. Now that I have been rather discouraging I'm going to tell you how to find work--make your own job and be your own boss. The guy who cleans my apartment and several others owned by my landlord makes over 2500/mo. He has got only a sixth grade education. He speaks only limited English.
Reply:Try different districts. I would go to every district in your general area, submit applications and resumes. Be aggressive. Talk to other teachers and administrators at your school, see if they know of any vacancies or retirements. Try networking with individual on the school board and see if they can give a good word down at the Board of Education office.
Reply:There are numerous teacher placement agencies online. Most charge the schools, not the teachers. Try a few.
